Yesterday I met up with Dave (who most of you met at the last camp - chap with the crocodile pump!) and David, my mate from work in Chatteris for a day on the lanes of Cambs.

It was a great day. we took in many new trails, mainly out around Cambridge and Ely, covering again about 100 miles.

Here are the bikes at the beginning of the first of many good trails

from this one, just outside Earith, we headed south down towards Cambridge via many lovely lanes.

Mile after mile racked up, until about halfway through we hit a highly overgrown lane...

There's a bike there somewhere...

... There it is!!!

Much to David and My amusement, Dave and his DRZ found quite a deep ditch, hidden in the overgrown lane -all we heard was '' oh F**k there's a ditch there!'' and down he went!

Lunch!

The Biggest downer of the day - a puncture, caused by a nail that was about 6 inches long - the slime couldn't save that it rapidly deflated...

How I stayed on it, I've no idea - the boys behind didn't know what the hell was going on! I'd stupidly left my Spanner at home after a nieghbour tried it on his car, I'd left it on the side that morning. But, about 1/4 mile down the trail was a house with horsebox to which Dave rode and the lovely man loaned us his tool set - so off came the wheel and in went a 21" tube. Now comes the bugger. After hat seemed an eternity, my pump (OK, it's designed for bicycles, but I'd used it before on my Husky) melted with the heat and friction from pumping it up!
As we had to return the tools, we decided to all head to the kind man's house. and there he was Pump ready - what a lovely man - not all countryside horsey folk are anti bike - so I popped a bit of air in and away we went again. Being a 21" in an 18 rim that was that really, it was a case of nurse it home nice and steady. So now I've a bit of work this week fitting my spare 18 tube in preparation for the coming weekend!

Loving the DRZ so far though, great little machine.

And the OS map - wouldn't go anywhere without it - fantastic for finding new routes which were then tracked on a phone app.

We’re not here for a long time, we’re here for a good time.

looks like a great day out,i must join you next time.
Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you're gonna be up again. But life goes on.

Nice write up, just one thing don't rely on the 21" to 18" tube trick; as it doesn't always work.
It's best to carry one of each and a repair outfit.
For me if I had the time I'd change the tube and repair the puncture before moving on; who knows the next one down the trail might be in an awkward place, or in the dark etc.
THE END OF THE ROAD IS THE START OF THE FUN
