Been out today with The Doctor on his new XR400. He managed to get it to pass an MOT with motocross tyres on. Didn't i know it, i couldn't keep up and fell off twice in slippy mud. I really need to change the K60 scout on the back and get knobblies. Can anyone suggest a better tyre, i know its been asked before.

please help and i want good value too.
Sometimes you're flush and sometimes you're bust, and when you're up, it's never as good as it seems, and when you're down, you never think you're gonna be up again. But life goes on.

Usual suspect of a Continental TKC80 or a Metzeler 6 Days Extreme.
If you only have one plug, it needs to be a good plug!
July 14 - still true, but now have two plugs!

Yam book quotes rear is a 130/80.

can i use 140/80 or 130/90 ??

What will be the effect, will it fit width ways?

130 is width 80 or 90 is side profile... I'd say stay 130 as it could foul the chain (measure up though). Maxxcross are a good tyre, but the metzeler offering is worlds apart. I rode for a few years on the maxxis, but now I have tried and run the six days, I'll not be going back.

Worth bearing in mind though Ferdie, you wont be doing tour de Scotland on these, they'll rip to shreds?

I've had both the aforementioned; 6 days and TKC's and conclude the following.
The 6 days are an excellent off road tyre, (used them on the XR and 2 x DRZ's ) and reasonable stable on the road although I wouldn't recommend any knee down antics!
The TKC's were a good compromise between road and trail, but that's just it they are a compromise.
I had them on my 1150 GS and they wore at an alarming rate, that said I don't know if it was due to the weight of the bike, or the composition / compound of the tyres, I also found them to be quite expensive.
One thing for sure is that they were 100% better than the Tourances that they replaced.
I suppose the ideal would be to look out for a second set of wheels, that way you have the best of both worlds, failing that I'd just suffer the expense of changing tyres more regularly than usual.
Also as Ben says I can't see the 6 days as the tyre of choice for the Tour de Scosse.

Hope this helps.
