Hello,

just starting a thread about the good old XR400 and the mods and tips I have done / found in my ownership.

A great bike, which mechanically has never really let me down, until yesterday when a known weak point ( I didn't know this until last night!) the auto decompression system, let go and wrecked my standard cam.

I thought that the XR would be out of action for a few months as a standard cam is super rare and aftermarket ones are usually around £300 plus import!!!! but as luck would have it, I found a new HotCams stage 2 race cam good and cheap (a fraction of the £300), so thought this a good opportunity to reflect and advise on my XR400 findings and experience...https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1350753381602836&set=pb.100000045611040.-2207520000.1490551633.&type=3&theater

Update. After a quick ride on a local lane, the bike is an absolute animal compared with its former self! I revs much more freely and harder. A bugger to kick now though

It's been a poorly XR recently.




. I knew the rockers would need replacing in the future, but not imminently. Just goes to show and teach me a lesson not to put jobs off! I even bought a spare set a week ago.

Finally swapping out the valve stem seals though! It was only one leaking (as is plain to see by the state of the valve- see the left most in this pic)





but all four are new whilst in there.




I fancied a red head for a while, so what better time than now? Also big thanks to the missus for letting me do some baking

looks like you ain't riding tomorrow then.i see what you mean about air filter cage.would it benefit me though?.thats been cut about a bit more than just taking the mesh out innit

Sadly no I wasn't able to ride! Went to watch and help at the motocross instead!

I think I'm good! Scraped hand/knuckles and bruised and grazed knees! Main issue is my hip is killing me! We will see tomorrow how bad it actually is

All back together, just need a timing inspection cover bolt and 1 rocker cover bolt, as both were a bit too corroded for my liking.

Starts first kick even from cold now! No smoke and rides great... and the cam and valves are nice and quiet now too...

ROLL ON NEXT CAMP!


I do have a fat bar conversion kit on its way though so mods aren't done yet. Also chopped the rear subframe about and lost 1.7kg off it (I have a spare, so just experimenting )
