THURSDAY

So were taking the car – yippee I cry – more room for shoes, dresses, make-up and don’t forget the hair straighter s.

I offer to drive but to my disappointment I’m not insured – yippee I cry.

I do help carry all my bags to the car but I don’t put them in it as they have to go in a certain way being so many of them – sure I hear something about breaking the suspension – What’ suspension I ask ?

On the ferry it’s all talk about Garmin’s, which version of Garmin everyone has (has conversation ever been so exciting) , maps and beer. My ears prick up at the talk of beer “YES PLEASE” I may as well as I can’t drive

We get off the ferry after a few more beers and set off for the drive to Ypres. Belgium won’t show on the Garmin ????? Perhaps I’m doing something wrong – after all I have never used a Garmin. Perhaps I’m pressing the wrong buttons. It keeps blacking out. I really must be pressing the wrong buttons or was it one too many beers? At least we have proper maps

We see a bike pull in behind up but we can’t stop as on motorway – we pull off when we can – Thinking it’s Dan as he was the one that mentioned bike trouble we are surprised to find out it’s Mark – Throttle might have gone – ok we can look for a motorbike dealer there must be at least one in Belgium. I Pad, I Phone, Garmin & HTC cannot track a motor bike dealer anywhere near. I really must have had too much beer – all this technology and I can’t find a motorbike dealer / garage or even a motorbike in Belgium. Luckily we get a call from Dan “It’s been sorted – all that was needed was a P Clip and a man appeared as if by magic with a box of them”
I’m now fed up with not really being sure of where we are or where we are going – too much beer makes Denise not a very good map reader – “I KNOW WHAT TO DO” my little phone has an app on it that shows maps. OMG all of a sudden Belgium appears on my phone – the world is now our oyster. All this I technology and my little phone puts it all to shame

We get to the camp site – what a great site and great location – well done that man who planned it x you know who you are x

Tent up – shoes unpacked – off to the best shop in Belgium – ALDI – fine beers, very fine wines. We can’t just take 3 bottles of wine that would leave only 1 in the box on the shelf and it will be lonely  YEAHHHHH we take all 4.

All tents up, everyone sorted we wander to town. There is a small bridge to walk over but it has an extra access point for cycles or if you want to walk. It goes up and over but none of use wanted to give it a go just in case someone came the other way !!!!!Graham forgot his invitation to the Mercedes launch that we pass – he has not even got his Mercedes owners club card on him so bang goes the free champagne.

We are in time for the last post at Menin Gate – so emotional. The 54,332 name on the gate are a site to see – no rushing this. Time for respect and reflection.

What bar do we visit – the last one we come to of course. A meal of typical Belgium food BURGERS but we did all have MAYO. Wine mmmm please – another bottle we all cry. Then we wander back to the site – sit round the BBQ some more chat and wine. Then off to bed.

FRIDAY

OMG frost in the morning – I want to stay in bed but the thought of hot shower, tea and porridge is enough to tempt even me. What a great first morning. We decide no trips out today just stay in Ieper’s there is lots to see and do here. Fab museum, fab buildings, fab beer at lunch. We wander back in the afternoon – let’s get meat for the BBQ and more beer and wine. What a great butcher in ALDI (as I said the best shop in Belgium). So an afternoon of drinking and eating was had. When we had eaten it was time for more coals on the BBQ for warmth – well someone thought one big coal would suffice!!!!!!!!! That was until we all had other ideas.LOL – then all of a sudden for me it was BED TIME leave the men to their cigars and port.

Saturday

Where is this morning frost coming from? But again such beautiful sunshine.

Vimy Ridge today – respect to the Canadians’ that took part in WW1. This memorial OMG – seeing for real is so much more than any picture can portray. Such a beautiful day to see such a beautiful memorial. We go and visit the trenches that are still there. How anyone managed to fight a war from such a confined space, hopefully none of us will never know. Sheep, where have all these sheep come from? They really are falling into rank and file. I have been watching them for 5mins and it really seems to me they are waiting to be told what to do and where and when to go. Perhaps too much beer and wine last night is adding to this illusion.

Tommy’s bar next – a great bar – he has his own trench & museum in the back it really is something to see.

A British Graveyard on the way back. Impeccably kept. Not one blade of grass out of place. All headstones in line. How many more Head stones will read UNKNOWN SOLDIER? I think to myself if this was in the UK how different would it be – the rubbish, the mess and the lack of respect?
It makes you think of all who gave their lives in WW1, WW2 and all the wars since and that are still going on. Those brave men and women who give their lives for our freedom.

Back to the camp site and in time for the Menin Gate Last Post. Still as emotional as the first visit. This time I chat to the 3 men from the fire service, who tonight have given their time to do the last post. I say a heartfelt Thank You too them for taking time out every day to do this.

An English bar we find – but we are the only English in there – but everyone was friendly – girls behind the bar !!!!!! as normal I attract the weird and wonderful –I talk to a couple of guys with a lovely dog . Their dog (so cute) is totally matted – they found in a cellar the day before it had been kept in there for 4months – I thought I was in an episode of ‘Allo ‘Allo

Sunday

Off to the boat Graham and I go (great a 3hr drive) – apparently I now have to do some work

The rest of the guys stay and visit other places.

What a fab, hot and sunny day – we sit on the boat drinking watching the French try to pull a tree from the river – so funny

Monday

Up at 4am so we get back to the camp site (3hr drive) in time to take tent down and pack car.
We make it. All off to ALDI to get wine to take home.

12pm ferry crossing – a lot calmer then the journey here. I have decided not to drink but then I see the bar and I may as well take advantage of not being able to drive. I have offered over the 5 days but a girl can only take being told NO so many times.

So all together a great trip, lots of beer, wine and food.

Great memories, lots of emotions and I can’t wait to go back.

Great write up puts us guys to shame. But where area Dan H's great photos of the Menin Gate with his super Samsung? Btw Garmin do not include Belgium in North West Europe so you have to add Belgium if you visit.

Great report Denise, good to read what you guys got up to, sounds like you all had a great time, thanks for taking the time to post it

By the way, did I read there were 'friendly' girls behind the bar?? How friendly I knew I would regret missing this one!
