I've thinking about making some hard case panniers. I've looked at metal boxes and could never afford those so i thought i would research making my own. I notice dan had record boxes and that started me thinking . I do like peli cases and after a look around on the interbob ive come up with this inexpensive idea.

What do you think ?

Or this cheaper one. m.ebay.co.uk/itm/361095840137?nav=SEARCH

I was going to use a similar mounting bracket to dans boxes made out of exhaust mounts.

Should be a fine idea bud. Try looking at fishing match boxes too, a similar thing, but potentially cheaper and more robust too

that's the type! Should be simple enough to fix to the bike?

Personally I'd be inclined to stick with your soft cases, as I think that if you drop the bike with the plastic fishing ones on they might well shatter, leaving you finding somewhere to stow the luggage within them.

[ EDITED IN
Notwithstanding the above, the shape of the tackle boxes is tapered, which will demand a stand off in order to fit them, unless you are going to have them angled inwards?]

An adaptor plate can easily be made to stop the soft bags going through the luggage hoop / racks and fixed with some jubilee clips, plus if you so wish the said plate can be slotted to take a couple of extra securing straps straps.

I'm thinking along the lines of a solid 2mm ally sheet fixed to the hoops.
Remember the alloy is only to stop the soft panniers from falling in towards the wheel, and once completed they will be supported by their own straps across the saddle, and the straps on the fabricated mount.

Method

#1 Trace around the outside circumference of the hoops, and cut ally sheet to shape.
#2 Drill 6X holes just large enough to accept jubilee clips, I suggest 4 top and one each side.
#3 Drill 8X holes just inside the inside circumference of the hoops, and slot each pair to accept the luggage straps, [these holes only need to be wide enough to pass the straps** through].
#4 Fit Jubilees.
#5 Stand back take a photo and admire your workmanship.

**The straps can be added or removed in seconds for trail work etc.
THE END OF THE ROAD IS THE START OF THE FUN

Roll top dry bags to match my big rear one. It can rain all it likes now. And I got one of these too to keep the sun in spain and the rain in UK off me.

I think you did the right thing there Ferdie the plastic cases/panniers just fall apart if you have even the softest of drops then you knackered no way to fix them safely and securely ok the dry bags could rip but you can make a repair if needed.

I bought a tarp for my latest trip and it worked brilliantly nice to have cooking and chilling space out of either sun or rain. The one you have there looks really good infact I wish I'd have seen it before I got the vango one

Id rather be cleaning my very muddy bike than driving a car

yeh after much thought for my 'off road' bias style i figured that soft cases due to impact damage which often happens to me as i like to push the envelope at times, is the best way to go. My mate martin tells me the Ali ones can leak after a few knocks and lids don't line up then.

i made the rite choice

What type of soft luggage is that? Brand and model. I'm going to look for something similar in the U.S. market. Those are EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thanks.
