Next year it will be 100 years since the out break of WW1. The battlefields and memorials are only 1 - 2 hours from Dunkirk and I have details of day tours from Ypres (Ieper) to most points of interest in the salient. There is a wealth of historical data on the web but you may find these of interest: Www.hellotommy.co.uk Www.greatwar.co.uk

Pre tour bike checks should include oils, tyres (3mm min), spare light bulbs, hi - vis vest or jacket, GB sticker, breathalyzer kit, head light deflectors, tool kit, maps Passports and EU Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Check with AA or RAC if in doubt.

Last time we booked with www.dfdsseaways.co.uk
Departure 12.00hrs Dover to Dunkirk Friday 27th June
Return 12.00hrs Dunkirk to Dover Monday 30th June
Check in closes 45 minutes before sailing so arrive one hour before sailing time.
Other sailings are available! Fare budget £40.00 for bike return.

1) Friday 27th June.
I suggest riders in Suffolk/ Norfolk meet at Copdock Tesco service station at junction 55 of A14 with the A12 at 07.30hrs and depart 07.45hrs south on A12 to meet Essex riders at Colchester BP Services at junction 28 on A12 at 08.00hrs and depart no later than 08.15hrs. Distance Ipswich to Dover ferry terminal 125 miles say (2.45hrs) via A12, M25, M20. Ferry, lunch and arrive Dunkirk (15.00hrs) local time.

2) Ride to the camp site www.jeugdstadion.be at Ieper ( 35 miles or 55kms say 1 hour) using drop off and tail end Charlie system just in case but the route is straight forward and we avoid toll roads. Camp fees budget £20 per tent for 3 nights. I have provisionally booked 6 places. There are excellent showers and the site is only a short walk to the town centre and a good Aldi selling BBQ items and drink. Visit Menen Gate for the Last Post.

3) Weekend touring then sampling the delights of Ieper. I am happy to do the overall organising and guide the tours if you wish or riders can make their own tours. Maybe you want to find the location of a relative killed in the conflict?

4) Monday 30th strike camp 0900hrs for a final tour to arrive at Dunkirk 11.00 for 1200 sailing to Dover and return to Suffolk.

Riders signed up so far:

SGR & Denise
Howling moon
Si
Markyt
Dan H plus BBQ

Anyone else interested please let me know asap so that I can update the camp site reservations as this site will be busy next summer. Ferry bookings are also cheaper if booked well in advance.

Dan Snow's Battle of the Somme on Discovery is well worth watching. Amazing real film coverage of the Battle.
Cheers

Ive booked the same as last year, 12.00hrs on both crossings. That way we will get home mid afternoon and will have time with family and can unpack in day light.

Everyone can chose their own return passage as we all have different deadlines. Weather will have an impact as well and most ferry companies let you alter departure times.
Let's enjoy the trip

In that case me ol ship mate it might be a good idea to change the times on your original passage.
Save any confusion for others.

Fair point and done not that there are any new riders! May post on ABR but small groups can be more fun and less hassle.
